![]() ![]() Once you’ve made the climb, you’ll pass by Snowshoe Lodge recently purchased by pop-culture sensation, Kanye West. Within the canyon, you’ll drop nearly 2,100ft, giving way to views of the Bighorn’s most dramatic canyons before climbing up the opposite side. Shell Creek trail works its way around the backside of the 9,900ft Antelope Butte before winding down the deep Shell Canyon. Meandering its way along the Western Slope of the Bighorn Mountains and starting at Granite Pass, Shell Creek is a 28.5 mile groomed trail until it reaches Paintrock where it continues on another 30 miles as an ungroomed marked trail. To go along with views of some of the Bighorns highest peaks, including the 13,005ft Black Tooth, you’ll find pieces of iconic American West history like a historic tie-flume splash dam constructed in 1905. Sawmill Pass offers views of the jagged peaks of the Cloud Peak Wilderness, interpretive sites of American West history, and epic vistas of the Bighorn National Forest. Trail A is 30 miles out-and-back that weaves its way through dense pine forest on the eastern slope of the Bighorns. To view and download a current Bighorn National Forest snowmobile map, click here. We’ve chosen a few of our favorite and most scenic trails in the Bighorns each trail listed below is accessible from either Bear Lodge Resort, Elk View Inn, or Arrowhead Lodge. But deciding which trails to explore first can be overwhelming each trail has its own unique features with plenty of opportunities to dive off-trail to fully experience the Bighorn backcountry. With over 318 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the Bighorn National Forest and 250” of snowfall annually, it’s easy to see why. You can get a map in Lovell at the visitor center.The Bighorn Mountains have been continuously rated in Snowest Magazine’s “Top 15 Places to Snowmobile” and were featured in a Boondock Nation episode in 2019. You can reach the South District by taking I-90 west to Laurel, MT, and taking the Highway 310 exit at Laurel all the way to Lovell, WY. You will need to take Highway 14 to Greybull, WY, and then take Highway 310 north to Lovell.įrom Little Bighorn Battlefield (through Billings): From November to May, 14A is closed for the winter.The park entrance is 10 miles up Highway 37. Follow Highway 14 west over the Bighorn Mountains to 14A towards Lovell, WY.Take exit 9 at Ranchester, WY to Highway 14.From the battlefield, take I-90 going east into Wyoming.Turn right on US 310 East for 3 miles onto Lovell, Wyoming.įrom Little Bighorn Battlefield (over the mountains):.The Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center is on your left, on the outskirts of Lovell, Wyoming.At Burgess Junction turn right at US 14 West and follow this highway for 52 miles.Take a left onto US 14 West and follow this highway for 33 miles.Turn off at exit 9 for Ranchester-Dayton/Greybull-Lovell.The Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center will be 0.2 miles on your right.Once in Lovell continue all the way through town then take a left onto US 14 East.Turn left at US 310 East and follow the highway for 63 miles to Lovell, Wyoming.Follow this highway for the next 12 miles. ![]()
